Hard 13 was cool, but it was Hard to get into at first. It felt as if i was breathing in some crazy ass fumes containing some kind of Biological gas. I had to get fresh air alot. That would be my only problem. Besides that Diplo was tight, Boys Noize made some sick ass noize. I didn't see the Mishka Givaway and the art installation. It was okay nothing to waw about.

NEWS ON CLOTHING LABEL FIVE FOUR

Back in September, menswear label Five Four sold out of a new $325 peacoat in one week. Buyed by strong orders from retailers, including Macy's, designer Andres Izquieta ordered luxurious fabrics from an Italian mill.

"I was thinking we were going to have a new category of $300 to $500 coats for fall 2009," says Mr. Izquieta, 28 years old. His co-chief executive, Dee Murthy, also 28, was confident, too; indeed, he had splurged on a new Aston Martin Vantage sports car for himself in March.

Alas, when world markets crashed the following month, consumers snapped their wallets shut. Many of the retailers that sold Five Four's trendy, casual jackets, shirts and other heavily detailed pieces canceled orders or backed out of payments.

Suddenly, Five Four found itself in free fall. "I feel like I woke up the first week of October, when everything stopped," Mr. Murthy says. The founders of the Los Angeles-based company would have to act quickly.

In the aftermath of last fall's credit crunch, the future is unclear. But as businesses like Five Four traverse the new terrain, they are creating long-lasting changes that will affect all consumers -- from where clothes are produced to their price and quality.

Marketing guru Paco Underhill predicts that the business world "will change more in the next five years than it has in the past 100." The process isn't purely destructive. "Each time something is gone, it frees up room," Mr. Underhill says. Five Four's scramble -- ranging from its rethinking of supplier and vendor relationships to an expansion into socks, rather than $500 coats -- show the evolution under way.

Knowing that only the agile would survive, Mr. Murthy and Mr. Izquieta worked quickly last fall to save their seven-year-old company. The line of $500 coats was out. They decided the new price had to be below $200.

At six o'clock one evening, Mr. Izquieta emailed the Italian mill operator to cancel the $17-a-yard fabric order. The mill operator immediately dropped his price to $7.50 a yard. "I could tell from his tone that he was under water," the designer recalls. The Italian textile industry is known for high quality and better factory working conditions, but numerous designers are fleeing its high prices.

Mr. Izquieta, too, had to put cost-cutting first. He located a mill in India that would produce a worthy fabric for $2 a yard, reducing the retail price of the coat to $185.

Meanwhile, lenders were shutting off credit to Five Four's vendors and many of the 1,000 stores that sell its clothes. For November, it had orders worth $1.2 million -- but only about $100,000 came from retailers with sufficient credit. "We had to figure out ways to ship these customers their winter orders," Mr. Murthy says.

He called retailers, saying, "This is a vicious cycle. If you can't pass credit, I can't sell you these goods, and if I can't ship you the goods, I can't stay in business." The solution: Five Four shipped on faith -- accepting post-dated checks, personal credit-card payments, and even verbal IOUs. "They offered any terms we wanted," says Dan Kogan, chief executive of Emoda, a retailer with stores in Philadelphia, Atlanta and online.

When one over-embellished shirt style sold poorly at Atrium, a store in New York, Five Four took it back and sent other shirts. "Their price was significantly lower than most of their competitors, given the quality of the goods," says Ivo Nikolov, Atrium's menswear buyer.

Mr. Murthy and Mr. Izquieta laid off four employees, bringing their work force to 25, and cut all advertising. They pulled out of the trade shows where they had sought new retailers. They stopped using airmail to ship some goods to and from their manufacturing facilities in China. They dropped the thread count of some woven shirts to 40 from 50. When their landlord declined to renegotiate their Los Angeles warehouse and office lease, they found new space for 50% less.

The survival plan was to help keep their existing retailers in business by making extra accommodations and to drop prices 20%. Both turned out to be important measures in cementing relationships: When Emoda cut its brand portfolio to 120 labels from 280, it doubled down on Five Four.

Back when Mr. Murthy and Mr. Izquieta launched Five Four while students at the University of Southern California (deriving the name from college slang they used when saying good-bye) the fashion world seemed to offer surprise riches. The first jeans they made, five years ago, cost $14 to make and carried an intended retail price of $68. A day before the pants shipped, a friend commented, "Nobody buys jeans for $68. You should sell them for $110." The partners snipped off the tags that night -- and the jeans blew out of stores at the higher price.

But to raise cash these days, Five Four is manufacturing just about anything that will turn a buck: backpacks, wine-bottle openers and socks -- three pairs for $20. They're cutting out middlemen by selling direct to consumers on their Web site and in pop-up stores -- a trendy retailing concept in which shops open for just a few days or weeks.

Five Four's net sales wound up flat at $8 million in 2008. With widespread store closings among their retailers, the brand is being sold in 800 stores, down from 1,000.

On a recent day at Five Four's office, Mr. Izquieta said he's still ambitious. "I want to create our generation's Polo. You can't be a megabrand in the U.S. today if you're selling a woven shirt for $200," he said. "I think the concept of luxury is passé."

Moments later, the company's chief financial officer stepped into the room with more disquieting news: Their buyer at Macy's had just been laid off, leaving Five Four with no relationship at a key customer.

Meanwhile, Mr. Murthy laments the end of his love affair with his still-new Aston Martin. It's nearly paid for, but he's convinced people give him dirty looks. "I always wanted a sports car. Now I'm like, 'What a stupid purchase. What did I think I was proving by buying that?'"

On February 3, 1959, a small-plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, United States killed three American rock and roll musicians: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson [1]. The day was later called The Day the Music Died by Don McLean in his 1971 song "American Pie

"The Winter Dance Party" was a tour that was set to cover 24 Midwestern cities in three weeks. A logistical problem with the tour was the amount of travel, as the distance between venues was not a priority when scheduling each performance. For example, the tour would start at venue A, travel 200 miles (320 km) to venue B, and travel back 170 miles (270 km) to venue C, which was only 30 miles (48 km) from venue A. Adding to the disarray, the tour bus used to carry the musicians was ill-prepared for the weather; its heating system broke shortly after the tour began. Drummer Carl Bunch developed a severe case of frostbitten feet while on the bus and was taken to a local hospital. As he recovered, Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens took turns with the drums.

The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa was never intended to be a stop on the tour, but promoters, hoping to fill an open date, called the manager of the ballroom at the time and offered him the show. He accepted and the date of the show was set for February 2.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies today arrested at least eight alleged members of the notorious Metro Transit Assassins tagging crew, some of whom are believed to be responsible for a several-blocks-long “MTA” tag in the concrete Los Angeles River bed that authorities say will cost millions of dollars to remove.

The arrests occurred during a series of early-morning raids centered in the Hollywood area. Among those detained for a parole violations is a famous tagger whose work “SMEAR” has won acclaim in the art community.

Those arrested were booked on suspicion of vandalism, drug possession, narcotics for sales, weapons possession and other parole violations, officials said, "These individuals are responsible for tags not only in Los Angeles but Las Vegas and San Francisco,” said Sheriff’s Cmdr. Dan Finkelstein, who is chief of the Metropolitan Transit Authority police. “The Army Corps of Engineers estimates that removing the "MTA" tag from the riverbed alone will cost $3.7 million.

Cleaning graffiti from the river is far more expensive than cleaning other areas. Officials use high-pressure water spray to remove the toxic paint.

But hazardous-materials crews must then dam and capture all the paint and water runoff to prevent it from getting into the river. The crew did an additional $20,000 worth of damage to transit vehicles and facilities. Finkelstein said the Los Angeles River "MTA" tag, in a vast industrial district east of downtown between two rail yards, took about 400 gallons of paint -- 300 gallons white and 100 gallons black. “It took them four nights to do it,” he said.

The three block letters cover a three-story-high wall and run the length of several blocks between the 4th Street and 1st Street bridges. The tagging crew, which is also known as “Melting Toys Away” and “Must Take All,” began about the time the transportation agency began using the MTA letters. Investigators say they have statements, including some on video, that implicate some of the crew members in the enormous tag.

“Some of this group could face federal charges,” Finkelstein said. During the raids, Finkelstein said, investigators found customized high-pressure fire extinguishers that, when filled with paint, allow the tagger to hang upside down on the underside of a freeway and quickly scrawl massive graffiti. These taggers are not kids, he said.

Most those detained are in their 20s; one of them drives a $60,000 BMW, and another member possesses a diamond-and-ruby-encrusted Metro logo pendant with paperwork suggesting it's worth $29,000, Finkelstein said.

For years, Mac users have long been rightfully smug about their platform's relative immunity to virus and malware attacks, but it's inevitable that those days will eventually come to an end. (As the Mac gains in popularity, it also earns more attention from malware developers, and it's this lack of malware being actively developed, not some special, inherent security, that have really kept the Mac a "safe" platform for the time being.)

Now we're seeing one of the first moderately-sized exploits to take advantage of Mac users. The iServices.A Trojan horse is an attack being distributed via BitTorrent, where it's disguised as a bootleg copy of the new iWork 09. Once installed, the malware takes administrator access and connects to remote servers over the Internet, where it can be given additional instructions as the author commands, from installing additional malware to stealing information off the Mac in question. The malware creator can also take complete remote control of any compromised machine.

Security firm Intego said that just 20,000 machines had been infected as of January 21 but that the risk of ongoing infection was "serious, and users may face extremely serious consequences" if they are stricken with the malware.

Mac users are suggested to use common sense -- that is, don't try to download and installed pirated software -- and to update any antivirus definitions immediately. If you're a Mac user and aren't using security software, well, this might be a good time to start.

As the Philadelphia Eagles lose to the Arizona Cardinals. I give a bow to the Eagles for catching up just to lose. It was a good game but heart breaking I tell you. Down to the title of this blog but the NFL Refs did not call that Passing Interference call in the 4th with 2 minutes remaining. It reminds me of 9/11, the year the Patriots won the Super Bowl after a bullshit call when Charles Woodson caused a fumble and the refs said it was a pass. Was the world feeling Patriotic after 9/11? Did the New England Patriots really win? Did Gruden get a ring after being traded to Tampa because of bullshit calls? What really happened?

I just know the Refs in this game were not on point. Even if he was outta bounds while he was hit with ball. It was clear evidence, but the last 2 passing interference calls they did not call. The Eagles had it, the Cardinals played a good game. The NFL was not on point with the Refs it makes me feel like i just got ripped off watching a De La Hoya match. It was wrong. refs go fuck yourself. Karma is a bitch. Thank you Eagles for a good game. I still believe in green. Any angry Eagles Fan just believe. R.I.P. Ron Asheton

The first full week of 2009 started off most miserably, when news of the death of pioneering punk guitarist Ron Asheton was announced. The man whose distinctive sledgehammer riffs provided the perfect foil for Iggy Pop's sneering vocals on the Stooges' landmark recordings was found dead of an apparent heart attack in his Ann Arbor home Tuesday morning; he was only 60 years old and had recently enjoyed newfound success with the reunited Stooges, who'd been touring off and on since 2003 and had released their comeback album The Weirdness in 2007.

A statement issued by Iggy Pop, drummer Scott Asheton (Ron's brother), saxophonist Steve Mackay, bassist Mike Watt, and the band's management read: "We are shocked and shaken by the news of Ron's death. He was a great friend, brother, musician, trooper. Irreplaceable. He will be missed. For all that knew him behind the facade of Mr. Cool & Quirky, he was a kind-hearted, genuine, warm person who always believed that people meant well even if they did not. As a musician Ron was 'The Guitar God,' idol to follow and inspire others. That is how he will be remembered by people who had a great pleasure to work with him, learn from him and share good and bad times with him."

Iggy Pop personally, sadly, added: "I am in shock. He was my best friend."

We at That's Really Week echo the statements above; we too shall miss Ron. And we have a feeling in a couple weeks we'll be reporting on the Stooges' long-awaited induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame; the band has been on the nominees' shortlist many times but unjustly passed over for years, but there's nothing like a tragic death to garner a band some much-overdue recognition.

Another woman who is no stranger to trouble, tragedy, or terrorism is Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, the 18-year-old daughter of late Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. And now Bakhtawar is letting her own voice be heard, writing and producing a rap called "I Would Take Away The Pain" about her mother, who was assasinated in December 2007. Bakhtawar's tribute was uploaded to YouTube this week and gives a chilling account of her mother's slaying and also praises her mom for her courage as an activist. This young woman's own courage for creating such an honest song should be praised as well.

Bernard Madoff, a quiet force on Wall Street for decades, was arrested and charged on Thursday with allegedly running a $50 billion "Ponzi scheme" in what may rank among the biggest fraud cases ever.

The former chairman of the Nasdaq Stock Market is best known as the founder of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, the closely-held market-making firm he launched in 1960. But he also ran a hedge fund that U.S. prosecutors said racked up $50 billion of fraudulent losses.

Madoff told senior employees of his firm on Wednesday that "it's all just one big lie" and that it was "basically, a giant Ponzi scheme," with estimated investor losses of about $50 billion, according to the U.S. Attorney's criminal complaint against him.

A Ponzi scheme is a swindle offering unusually high returns, with early investors paid off with money from later investors.

On Thursday, two agents for the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation entered Madoff's New York apartment.

Sacheen Littlefeather walked up the stage during the Oscars to accept Marlon Brando’s award to only to reject it.

Sacheen Littlefeather (born Maria Cruz on 30 January 1947 in Salinas, California, U.S.) is an activist who donned Apache dress and explained on behalf of actor Marlon Brando when he would not arrive to claim the Oscar he had won for his performance in The Godfather in a prepared statement at the Academy Awards on March 27, 1973.
Marlon Brando became involved with the American Indian Movement (AIM) in the early 1970s. He decided in 1973 that he wanted to make a statement about the events at Wounded Knee and contacted AIM about providing a person to accept the Oscar for him. Dennis Banks and Russell Means picked Maria Cruz. She had previously been the winner of the 1970 Miss American Vampire competition.

She represented Brando and his boycotting of the Best Actor Oscar for The Godfather (1972), as a way to protest the ongoing siege at Wounded Knee and Hollywood and television’s misrepresentation of American Indians. Brando had written a fifteen-page speech to be given at the awards by Cruz, but when the producer met her backstage, he threatened to physically remove her or have her arrested if she spoke on stage for more than 45 seconds. Her comments on stage were improvised. She then went backstage and read the entire speech to the press. Exactly what became of the Oscar still remains unknown.
Afterward, she began a brief acting career. Cruz has a heritage that includes Apache, Yaqui, Pueblo, and European ancestry.

Currently, Sacheen is the co-ordinator of the Kateri Prayer Circle in San Francisco and resides in the San Rafael, California area.

Kanye's Heartless video is well on point on it's designs. The movements, body language and feeling. You hear pain and see stress. It's dope as well Mr Hype Williams video legend and movie maker.

Kaws Does Kanye Album Art

Kanye West is an artist in every sense of the word. He’s talented, cocky, insecure, and brilliant. This unique fusion can often times cause confusion and a wave of cynicism towards the man’s naturally born talents. After a successful third album to seal the deal of his school themed trio audio journey, it looks as if Mr. West is all grown up now as he embarks on a new terrain of experimental sounds that reminds me at least of how house music sounded like back in the early ’90s. Kanye practically sings in every track, granted his voice is filtered to resemble T-Pain; the man however has a unique vision. Kanye is in a place that is the envy of many artists, he has the ability to recreate himself over and over again and he has the loyal fan base that equally expects him to shape shift and transform. His new album, “808s & Hearbreak” is set to release late November. Of course out goes his flashy Jeremy Scott frames and his loud patent lanvin kicks and in is his subdued tieless door-to-door salesman attire capped with his fabric broken heart mended over his, well, heart. His album art was commissioned by Kaws, another artist who’s subtle commentary on consumerism and capitalism stands on an unsteady platform not yet quite defined as Kaws himself is thriving in wealth and fame from consumers of his work who appreciate his critique. But then again, I suppose this is what art is all about in the end, no?

Joaquin Phoenix showed up at Dam-Funk's Culver City hot spot Funkmosphere on Monday night to debut his rap career, along with your boy Casey Affleck who was filming the chaos.

Joaquin announced the other day that he was giving up acting to focus on music. A source said: “He was filming a documentary of his transition from acting to music.”

Dam-Funk's Funkmosphere at Carbon was titled L.A.s “Best Boogie Funk” recently by LA Weekly.
